Travis was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease and Leukemia at 12. Two years later he was mostly limited to bed, but the Town of Vernon sent letters and gifts to him for Christmas. He and his mother were pictured on the front page of the Vernon paper. Travis was quoted as saying his favorite thing to do was to go to the drug store for a "sweet lime".
